The collection contains papers relating to John Hellenthal's personal and political activities, as well as his work as a member of the State House of Representatives. The collection is divided between his legislative files, and his personal and political files. The first part of the collection, Personal and Political Files, includes correspondence files, files on the Alaska statehood movement, Egan campaign materials, personal business files, and miscellaneous maps and photographs. The second part of the collection, Legislative Files, includes general legislative files with a focus on the 1960 session, general files and reports from the Judiciary Committee, files on the Judiciary and Administrative Procedures Acts, files on pending bills, and publications.

John Simon Hellenthal was born on February 20, 1915, in Juneau, Alaska. He received his law degree in 1939 and began practicing with his father in Anchorage. In 1955 he was elected as a delegate to the State Constitutional Convention in Fairbanks. After statehood was announced, he was elected to the State House of Representatives and served from 1959-1962.
